About Rinkside

We like to tell stories. We aim to paint pictures, delve into data, take you places.

We want to separate ourselves from upstart blogs, content mills, rumor-mongers and the thumbing-down of sports journalism.

With more than 30 combined years in covering the NHL, we aim to bring you high-quality, in-depth features and analysis with a focus on the Florida Panthers and, on occasion, other great tales from the world of hockey.

We’re excited to be stepping into the realm of independent publishing, and we hope you’ll enjoy the content we have to offer.

Erin Brown

Contributing Editor

A sports journalist with just under two decades of experience, Brown’s works have appeared in numerous sports publications since 1998, including NHL.com, ESPN’s wire service, CBS Sportsline and NHL Faceoff Magazine, among others. She covered the IIHF World Championship in 2001, as well as NHL Entry Drafts and NHL All-Star Games. From 1998-2002, Brown served as managing editor for the Pro Hockey EuroReport. In addition to a couple stints covering the PGA Tour, Brown most recently worked as an NHL producer and editor from 2005-2011 for a major sports web site.

When not injured, Brown fills the role of scoring winger on the ice.

Daren Smith

Contributing Editor

Smith has been involved in sports journalism since handling play-by-play duties for Northwestern University football, basketball and baseball from 1983-85. He was NHL senior editor/assistant news director at an ESPN-owned wire service from 1988-2004, covering the Stanley Cup Finals each year from 1995-2004 as well as the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002. Smith covered NASCAR briefly during the NHL lockout and has been a senior editor for a comprehensive baseball site for the past seven years.

Smith has an affinity for all things Canadian, particularly Coffee Crisp and has attended games in 22 of the 30 current NHL arenas as well as with 12 defunct barns.
